Hi Debra, thanks for asking. The reeds are replenished from the top, on a monthly basis apparently – depending on the island, on some islands it’s less often. So it’s ongoing (with some breaks in-between).

How amazing that they are able to maintain this lifestyle. I’m curious if they repair the reeds from underneath the island, or above. It seems that would be an ongoing task. Thanks for sharing an inside look at their culture. in lak’ech, Debra

In reply to Marilyn. Thank you for your comment Marilyn. Yes and they are a graceful people - living in harmony with their environment and in peace, away from trouble. I hope they will be able to continue living their lives undisturbed for a long time (!). Modernism and also the effects thereof (contamination of the water in the lake) are effecting them a bit.
